Black Water Event off Southwest Florida—2002

An area of discolored water, called "black water," was reported in January 2002 off the coast of southwest Florida between Naples and Key West. An informational status report was posted on May 4, 2002.

BLACK WATER STATUS REPORT AS OF MAY 4, 2002

This report summarizes information received during the period April 7–May 3. Based on individuals’ observations and satellite imagery, the January–February body of blackish water has almost dissipated, both by transport through the Keys into the Florida Straits and by disruption of the mass by winds and wave action. At this time, investigators are still undecided about the initial cause, its composition during January and February, and its effect on gulf marine communities. The main topic of disagreement is the degree of contribution made by freshwater runoff, i.e., was freshwater input the initiating factor or a supplement to a marine event? Several groups have developed hypotheses. Discussion about theories and findings continue.
