Southeast Florida Manatee Interns
The position includes assisting with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in South Florida. He or she will assist with manatee and dolphin field necropsies as needed and conduct photo-ID and radio tracking research as time permits.
Two positions are currently available: one for Fall (October–January) and one for Spring (January–April). Each position is generally 40 hours per week, with some nights and weekends as needed. The positions are located in Tequesta (east coast, just north of Palm Beach). The position includes assisting with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in South Florida. The intern will operate trucks, trailers, and boats up to 22' in length. He/She will assist with manatee and dolphin field necropsies as needed and conduct photo ID and radio tracking research as time permits. He/She will complete mortality and rescue reports, label/catalog slides, perform equipment maintenance and assist with other office and public outreach work as needed.
Qualifications:
Junior or senior college students and recent graduates are eligible. Interns should have some research field experience, be able to drive manual transmission trucks, be computer literate, comfortable speaking to the public and proficient in the use of 35mm cameras, telephoto lenses, and filters. Previous animals handling experience is desirable, but not necessary. Ability to trailer flatbeds, and boats, operate watercraft up to 22' in length and experience with radio telemetry tracking gear is desirable, but can be trained. Interns must possess a valid driver's license, be able to lift 50 lbs., and swim. Interns should understand that this job will require them to be wet, dirty, and outdoors in all weather conditions. This position is unpaid, housing is not provided, and interns must provide their own transportation to and from the field station.
