FWC ASKS ANGLERS TO REPORT AND RELEASE TAGGED SNOOK IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Biologists at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) need help from Florida anglers with a snook-tagging project.

FWRI researchers and local fishing guides are placing yellow dart tags just below the dorsal fin of common snook in Florida Bay and the Florida Keys. FWRI will reward anglers who report catches of tagged snook with a T-shirt and the chance for a small cash prize.

The snook-tagging study gives anglers the opportunity to help with fisheries research. Gulf of Mexico snook differ genetically from their Atlantic Ocean cousins. The two distinct populations have slight differences in size, growth and maturity rates. Therefore, management of snook varies by coast, with different size limits and closed seasons. This study will look at genetic intermixing within the study area, as well as examine seasonal movement of snook. Researchers also will use the study to estimate the number of Gulf snook compared to the number of Atlantic snook in the area.

Anglers are encouraged to release the fish with the tag intact after recording valuable research information for FWRI. This practice will enable biologists to track long-term movement through multiple recaptures and releases.

Anglers can report their catch of tagged snook through one of the following options.

Anglers should include the following details in their report:

  • Tag number found on the dart tag
  • Fish length (total length)
  • Capture date, location and time
  • Angler name, address, phone number and e-mail

The snook-tagging project is funded by the Wildlife Foundation of Florida and Discover Florida’s Oceans license tag and coordinated by biologists with FWRI.
