How do I find the meaning of a word used on the site?
Check our Glossaries of Terms for more information.

How do I cite FWRI Web site information in my bibliography?
While the general recommended format for citing information from the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s Web site is listed below, there may be an alternative citation format listed in the text of the article. Remember to check with your professor or publisher; he or she may have different source documentation requirements.

  • FWRI Format
Author’s Name, last name first*. year of posting.** Title of document. Title of complete work, <URL beginning http://> (date of access).

  • Example
Arnold, William S. 2000. Status Report on the Calico Scallop, Argopecten gibbus, Fishery in Florida. Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Web Site. <http://research.myfwc.com/features/view_article.asp?id=3431> (accessed 1 July 2004).

FWRI strongly recommends that you retain a print copy of the information cited. Ours is a dynamic, science Web site; new information is added regularly, and outdated information is removed.

*If an author’s name is not immediately available on an article, enter the article title in the Web site search function. The search will display all related articles as well as the name of the individual author or section responsible for the articles. If no individual author or section name is available, use the Web site title as the author: Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Web Site.

**If you are unable to determine the date posted, use the abbreviation n.d. (no date).

Why are some of the common fish and wildlife names capitalized while others are lowercase?
Over time, each scientific discipline developed its own language conventions. On this site, the language differences are most obvious in the spelling of common names. Biologists do not capitalize the common names of fish, but the common names of birds are capitalized.

Where can I find more resources for students and teachers?
