SPECIMEN COLLECTION

FWRI has three extensive collections which include about 250,000 catalogued entries of preserved invertebrates and adult and larval fish. Because no one person can become an expert on the thousands of marine animal species found in Florida waters, scientists use these collections as tools to assist them as they identify animals collected during research. Collections staff also use specimens for presentations, arrange for loans to be used as teaching or research aids, and assist scientists and the public with identifications.
